California Day 3- San Diego Wild Animal Park

Okay, I know it's been a little bit, but I finally got around to posting California Day 3. We went to the Wild Animal Park on Monday. It was pretty cool. I learned quite a bit about animals, including the fact that giraffes do indeed chew cud (I've been curious about that for a few years now. Ever since I saw one that looked like it was chewing cud). I do wish that we had the money to do a photo tour of the park, but those are pricey. You get to feed some of the animals so that they'll come close enough for a picture, and instead of driving around outside the fence, the car goes inside the reserve. But at over $100 a person, that doesn't look like something we'll be doing in the near future. For free, the train ride around the outside is pretty worthwhile though.

"I've never seen you here before."
Because we went in the spring, we got to see lots of baby animals. Some, like this one, haven't met all the other animals in the park yet. This one was just discovering what the funny thing with wings is.

What's the human doing here?Oh, he's giving a shot. Once the animals realized the vet was not coming for them, they were actually quite curious what he was doing.
They only put the lion cubs out when we were there. But they were cute enough to almost make us forget that we didn't get to see any big lion
This little cub already had the attitude of King of the Jungle. He was pacing around and growling at us, just to make sure we knew who was in charge.

Brian caught him in mid-growl. It sounded just like Simba on The Lion King.
We decided to feed the Lorikeets while we were at the Animal Park. I was a little hesitant at first, and really nervous when more than one landed on my arm.

I did eventually get used to having the birds on my arm, as long as their tails stayed angeled away from me.

This one decided that it could find food easier if it perched on my nieces head.
Crazy prehistoric looking bird.

We got to the gorilla exhibit right at lunch time. I have to say, apes are the one animal that seem to understand that they are in a zoo, and they don't really seem to like being stared at.

I love this guy's face. He seemed like leader of the group.
Here we are waiting for the bird show to start. I have to say, the bird show at the Hogle Zoo is actually better than this one.

I love the way the birds hold their wings around the food when they are eating it so no other birds will see it and steal it away.

The owl was actually one of my favorites to see fly.

Wow, Tonya. I didn't even realize you had gone. And when did you get the nice camera. All these photos could be printed in a magazine.
